At Smart Smile Center, we provide a wide range of preventative dental treatments. These include comprehensive dental examinations, oral hygiene education, dental cleaning and topical fluoride treatments.
Dental Examinations
It is recommended that you visit your dentist at least twice a year to ensure that you maintain a high standard of oral hygiene. However, some patients require more dental appointments due to special circumstances.
During examinations, your dentist will evaluate your oral hygiene at home, the strength and structure of your teeth, indications of decay and cracks, gum disease, as well as check your tongue, cheeks, throat, and lips for any signs of oral cancer and assess your jaw joint.
Even if you are good at taking good care of your teeth at home, you still the need the help of your dental team. Your dentist can detect issues in your mouth that you might not feel or see. Some dental problems don’t become visible or cause discomfort until they become serious. Such oral health problems include cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer.
With a regular visit to your dentist, possible oral health problems can be detected and prevented right away, which means that the problem can be treated and solved at a manageable stage.
Oral hygiene instructions
Good oral hygiene habits will help to prevent oral health problems, and in return save you from the agony caused by tooth pain and dental expenses. You can achieve this by committing a few minutes daily to your dental hygiene care at home.
As part of the dental check-ups, your dentist will also explain the proper way to brush and floss your teeth including other oral hygiene practices that you can perform at home to improve your dental care and oral health.
Dental cleans
Professional dental cleaning is a comprehensive method of cleaning your teeth and gums using specialised instruments. The procedure aims to remove plaque and tartar deposits that have accumulated on the teeth over time.
The tartar can’t be removed by ordinary brushing so it is important to visit your dentist and dental hygienist to remove the deposits that may harm your teeth and gums. They will clean and polish the surfaces of your teeth so the bacteria will have a hard time adhering to your teeth and you can easily keep them clean during your daily oral hygiene care at home.
Fissure sealants
Dental fissure sealants are plastic coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of the permanent back teeth known as molars and premolars. Sealant protects the back teeth from decay. The chewing surfaces of the back teeth have grooves (fissures) that make them susceptible to decay.
The fissures can be deep and hard to clean. As a result, plaque can accumulate in these areas, leading to the development of cavities. Fissure sealants sit over the deep grooves and prevent the bacteria from reaching the tooth. Sealants are ideally placed in molars once they have erupted into the mouth. They are also ideal to place on adult teeth and still be effective in preventing decay.
Topical fluoride treatments
Topical fluoride treatment is applied to help prevent tooth decay due to the way it hardens the tooth enamel and supplies it with essential minerals, a process called remineralisation. Professional fluoride treatment is applied to your teeth as a gel, which is placed in a disposable mouth guard.
The gel is left on the teeth for two minutes. After the treatment, you will be advised not to eat, drink or rinse for around 30 minutes so the fluoride can be fully absorbed by the teeth.
X-rays and OPG’s
X-rays are used to diagnose problems such as damaged jawbones, impacted teeth, dental abscess, cysts or tumours and decay that has developed between teeth. At Smart Smile Dental, we use the latest type of x-ray machine that emits virtually no radiation.
In some cases, we may also recommend OPG (Orthopantomogram), a wide view x-ray of the lower face displaying all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw in a single picture. This helps the dentist to understand your bite, the location of your nerves and the connection between the different teeth in your arch.
Mouthguards
Custom mouth guards provided by your dentist offer the most comfort and protection you need. They are made from a strong plastic material that easily fits your teeth and gums. High-quality custom mouthguards are effective in protecting your teeth, lips, cheeks and tongue from dental injuries. They are essential for people engaging in contact sports and other activities that require mouth protection.
At Smart Smile Dental in Deer Park, our goal is to make quality dental care affordable. We encourage you to take advantage of our latest offers.
